The threat of a military confrontation between the two countries has been a constant issue since the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. The US has accused Iran of various acts of aggression, including the targeting of oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and the attack on the Saudi Arabian oil facilities in September 2019.
