The past few weeks have been tumultuous in Minneapolis, with tensions between the community and federal agents reaching a boiling point. The latest development in this ongoing story came on Wednesday when videos emerged of a confrontation between ICU nurse Alex Pretti and federal agents, just 11 days before he was fatally shot by officers.
According to reports from The News Movement and Sahan Journal, the incident occurred on 13 January during community protests against federal immigration sweeps in the area. Pretti, who was not involved in the protests, was grabbed by officers and brought to the ground during the confrontation. Steve Schleicher, an attorney representing Pretti's family, stated that this violent encounter could not have justified his killing.
The killing of Pretti was not an isolated incident. In the days following his death, signs emerged that the Trump administration was trying to understand the level of anger against federal immigration agents that could ignite across Minnesota and the nation. Early in the week, President Trump touted "very good" phone calls with Minnesota governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey, despite his previous disparaging comments towards both leaders.
However, despite these efforts to de-escalate tensions, ICE raids continued in the area. According to an internal memo reviewed by Reuters, ICE officers in Minnesota were directed to avoid engaging with "agitators" and only target "aliens with a criminal history." Senate Democrats have threatened to block legislation that would fund the Department of Homeland Security and several other agencies, potentially leading to a partial government shutdown. For many Democrats, this move is seen as the right one in response to the administration's immigration crackdown and the fatal shootings of unarmed citizens like Pretti.
Meanwhile, the US women's national soccer team was wrapping up the first international window of 2026. Emma Hayes used the opportunity to examine fresh faces among her incredibly deep player pool, resulting in an experimental squad with a record-low average cap count. Despite the constant shuffling under Hayes after the 2024 Olympics, this was an especially experimental squad.
