Two former US presidents and a renowned author have raised the alarm over the state of American democracy following the fatal shootings of two civilians by federal agents in Minneapolis. In statements and opinion pieces, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Francine Prose have urged Americans to speak out against what they perceive as an authoritarian takeover.
According to Francine Prose, a former president of PEN American Center and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, America is on the brink of an authoritarian takeover (Prose, 2026). She points to the killing of an innocent poet and an ER nurse at a VA hospital by federal agents as evidence. The unprovoked shootings have left the citizens of Minneapolis in fear, with some afraid to leave their houses for fear of violence and arrest, regardless of their citizenship status.
In a statement, Obama and his wife, Michelle, called the fatal shooting of 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti a "heartbreaking tragedy" and a "wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault" (The Guardian, 2026). The Obamas implored Americans to stand up for their values and speak out against the government's attempts to intimidate and silence its citizens.
Bill Clinton echoed the same sentiment, warning that the shooting was a "sign of a dangerous trend" and a "threat to our democracy" (The Guardian, 2026). The former president urged Americans to "stand up for our values, our institutions, and the rule of law."
Prose further highlighted the chilling similarities between the current situation in America and the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime, with videos of detention centers for children and their gyms recalling the youth choruses proudly showcased by the Nazis at the Terezin concentration camp.
These warnings from influential figures come as the Trump administration continues to face criticism and controversy over its handling of various crises, from immigration policies to attacks on the media and free speech. Prose argues that it is essential for Americans to pay attention to the real issues and not be distracted by the constant stream of headlines and crises.
