Activists across the United States have called for a nationwide protest on Friday, urging "no work, no school, no shopping" as part of a growing non-violent movement against the Trump administration's controversial immigration crackdowns. The demonstration, also known as a "blackout" or general strike, comes after renewed scrutiny of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents' aggressive enforcement tactics following a series of fatal shootings.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office confirmed to The Guardian on Thursday that Democrats and the White House had reached a deal to avoid a government shutdown. The agreement will advance a package of spending bills while separating a Department of Homeland Security spending bill from the package. Democrats will continue negotiating further guardrails on immigration agents in light of the recent fatal shootings in Minneapolis.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has taken an unusual step by suing the US Treasury and Internal Revenue Service for $10bn (about £7.9bn) over an unauthorized disclosure of his tax returns during his first term. The Thursday lawsuit marks the first time Trump, who famously broke precedent by not releasing his tax returns while running for, and then attaining, the presidency, has sued government agencies that are part of the executive branch, which he leads.
ICE's "border czar," Tom Homan, held a news conference in Minneapolis on Thursday, where he acknowledged that "no agency is perfect" but did not mention the fatal shootings of US citizens by immigration agents there this month. During the press conference, Homan noted that the administration would continue enforcing immigration laws and working with local and state law enforcement agencies.
