Texas is set to carry out its first execution of the year, with Charles Victor Thompson, 55, scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on January 26, 2023. Thompson was condemned for the April 1998 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30, at Hayslip's apartment in Tomball, a Houston suburb.
According to reports, Thompson was sentenced to death for the murders in 1999. However, he escaped from custody three days later and remained on the run until his capture in 2001. His conviction was upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2003.
The shooting took place during a confrontation at Hayslip's apartment. According to evidence presented at Thompson's trial, he entered the apartment and shot both victims multiple times. Hayslip was found dead in her bedroom, while Cain was found in the living room.
Thompson's attorneys have filed several appeals claiming that he received ineffective assistance of counsel during his trial. However, these appeals have been denied, and the US Supreme Court has declined to hear his case.
Thompson's execution is expected to be the first of at least 10 executions scheduled in Texas this year. The state resumed executions in September 2022 after a seven-year hiatus caused by a legal battle over the use of a controversial execution drug.
