The Dark Side of Wellness
The pursuit of wellness has become a multibillion-dollar industry, with millions of people around the world seeking to improve their physical and mental health through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. However, a growing number of experts are warning that the wellness movement has a dark side, with unintended consequences that can actually hurt our health.
The Impact of Social Media
Excessive social media use has been linked to lower wellbeing in young people, particularly girls. According to the World Happiness Report, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, the more time spent on social media, the greater the loss of wellbeing. 70% of girls aged 11-14 say they feel pressure from social media to look perfect, while 45% of boys in the same age group report feeling the same pressure.
"Social media is like a highlight reel, showing everyone's perfect moments, but not the struggles," says Michael Plant, Research Fellow at the Wellbeing Research Centre. "It's creating unrealistic expectations and making people feel inadequate."
The Dangers of Fad Diets
The seed oil panic is another example of how the pursuit of wellness can go wrong. Some experts are warning that the trend of replacing olive oil with beef tallow or other animal fats is actually hurting cardiac patients. 90% of cardiac patients are not getting enough omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health.
"My patients are replacing olive oil with beef tallow, even if they don't tell me during cardiac rehab," writes a clinical dietitian. "It's a trend that's not backed by science and can actually harm their health."
The Tragedy of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in young people, with 600 under-35s dying every year in the UK due to undiagnosed heart conditions. The charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is campaigning for more funding for research and for the introduction of a national cardiac screening program for all over-14s.
"We need to raise awareness about the risks of sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of cardiac screening," says a spokesperson for CRY. "It's a tragedy that these young lives are being lost due to a lack of knowledge and resources."
What to Watch
