Kazmierczak, a resident of the area, was quickly apprehended by local law enforcement and taken into custody for questioning. He was initially charged with third degree assault by the Minneapolis police but now faces more serious federal charges.

According to reports, Kazmierczak had previously made threatening comments about Omar, stating that "someone should kill" the Minnesota lawmaker. These comments were relayed to investigators by a close associate of Kazmierczak. The source, who wished to remain anonymous, also claimed that Kazmierczak had been increasingly agitated in the days leading up to the attack.
